In 1996, the American Board of Otolaryngology (ABOto)
commissioned a national practice analysis study to
identify the scope of the specialty of otolaryngology-head
and neck surgery. The document below describes the
methodology used to conduct the study and the results
obtained. From this study, the Exam Blueprint was
established. This document, which lists specific content
areas and procedures, serves as the blueprint for
the ABOto Otolaryngology Training Examination and
the ABOto Written Qualifying Examination.

The OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery Comprehensive
Core Curriculum is a compendium of topics, diseases
and disorders that is included in the scope of knowledge
for OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery. The
Curriculum outlines and provides an operational structure
for the body of knowledge that is available in OtolaryngologyHead
and Neck Surgery Residency training programs. This
Curriculum is the foundation for the written and oral
certification examinations developed by the American
Board of Otolaryngology.
